Cubensis As Neil Young For Halloween Mystery Album

It’s become very popular for bands to don a “Musical Costume” for Halloween shows and since 2005, Southern California’s Grateful Dead tribute, Cubensis, has been doing so in the form of their Mystery Album shows.  Normally a complete album from an artist, this year, Cubensis chose to perform their version of a Neil Young concert in lieu of an album.

“There really was no complete album we felt worked for us so we created a set list that we thought we’d like to hear live.  We also made sure the A minor songs were spread out in the set,” said Craig Marshall, lead guitar and founder of the band.

Turns out, they performed a set list that everyone wanted to hear on two nights, October 30th in San Diego at Winston’s OB and October 31st at PCH Club/Golden Sails in Long Beach.  I didn’t get an exact number but both nights were pushing capacity if they didn’t reach it.  They split the night with one set Grateful Dead inspired favorites and one set of the Neil Young Mystery Album.

Now, full disclosure here, I had the pleasure of being the Lighting Designer for both of these shows and while I normally don’t write about my own gigs, I feel a certain place in my heart for this one.  It was wonderful.

They’ve been doing the mystery album Halloween sets since the 90’s, not 2005. I left So. Cal. in ’04, and had been going to Cubensis shows since the mid-90’s, and those shows had already been established by the time I started checking them out.
