Whale Meat Sushi

The makers of the documentary The Cove took their time in Los Angeles for the Oscars to do a little covert investigation into a popular sushi restaurant at the Santa Monica airport last week.  The eatery called The Hump, the film makers were told, was serving whale meat sushi.  While popular in Japan, the sale of sea mammals is illegal in the US.  Donned with their James Bond style cameras and microphones, they discovered not only were they selling whale meat (at a hefty price of $600 a serving) they found after sending samples off for testing that the meat was of the endangered Sei Whale.  The tests were performed at the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University.

Sei Whales

The Sei Whale, on the protected Endangered Species list, is the third largest whale in the world reaching a whopping 66 feet long and weighing in at a hefty 45 tons.  The Sei’s population has dwindled to roughly 54,000 as of 2006 as commercial whaling has virtually decimated the population.

It’s bad enough they’re selling whale.  But to offer an endangered species for human consumption is atrocious.  Even worse is the penalty for serving up an endangered species is a mere $20,000 and a year in prison.  An official investigation is underway and the property The Hump resides upon is owned by the city of Santa Monica.  I say the fines should be multiplied by 10 and awarded to protecting the worlds largest and most docile of creatures, the whales.

The Zone and Spidergawd at TRIP 10/1/09

We’ve all done it…just some of us deny the strangeness of it….synced up Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd with the Wizard of Oz movie.  You don’t have to believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or Jesus.  You don’t need to be under the influence of psychoactive drugs.  You just need to open your mind to the possibility that it does work…and there you are.

Now, Thursday night in Santa Monica, CA at a place, ironically, called TRIP, the ZONE will play live the Dark Side of the Moon album LIVE while they play The Wizard of Oz on the screen behind them.  A true experience in live entertainment.  I’ve seen them do this once before and it was really cool.  Forget the fact that the Zone performs the album excellently, the way they get the timing down to sync with the movie was flawless last time.  Best $7.00 you’ll spend this week on entertainment.  Following their Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard set, The Zone will fill the rest of the night with covers from Phish, the Beatles and many other jamband favorites.

Opening for the Zone will be local Americana Rock band, Spidergawd.  Taking their influences from the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, The Band among others, Spidergawd will mix familiar sounding originals in with the hits from the hippie generation into their show.  Featuring Charlie Hornsby (Bruce Hornsby’s cousin) on keys, Spidergawd is just a fun band to go listen to over a couple of beers.  Fun music you want to hear.

Nate LaPointe plays Trip in Santa Monica Photo by Morris Caraway

Last night the Nate LaPointe Band played acoustic night a this little place in Santa Monica, CA called Trip.  Wedged in between The Luvnaughts and a female singer songwriter I didn’t get the name of, Nate LaPointe Band certainly stood out as the highlight of the evening.  Sans their bass player, Ivan Johnson, the NLB took the stage with Nate on acoustic guitar/vocals, Dave Johnson on keys and Chris Payne playing the drum box.  CC Sherman, the newest addition to the NLB line-up provided some much needed female vocals to the group.

The NLB’s bluesy, folky Americana sound is steeped with influences that range from the psychedelic rock of the 60′s to the down home blues of the Mississippi Delta.  The accomplished guitarist from Laramie, WY has truly developed a sound that is unique to his own and after years of playing with Southern California’s premier Grateful Dead tribute, Cubensis, as well as occasional gigs with Motown great, Bobby Womack, Nate’s personal style is shining through.  Currently working on finishing up their second album, due out before the holiday season, the Nate LaPointe Band should be the band to watch for in 2010.  If you love good guitar playing, there’s no question the Nate LaPointe Band is worth the price of admission.
