Who needs big concerts venues, going way out to the desert and paying high prices and having to put up with the likes of Ticketmaster when there are events like the Eagle Rock Music Festival?
Sure, it’s a neighborhood event and it’s only one afternoon and evening – 4-11 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 1 in 2011 – but it attracts LA-area independent bands, brings in 100,000 people and asks just $5 as a donation.
The event is full of music for its seven hours. There are seven stages, the main one called the Emerging Stage. It alone has six bands scheduled.
In all, 60 bands are performing. Among them are Health and Flying Lotus, both which have played Coachella, the huge multi-day festival in the desert that charges $300 for a required all-weekend pass.
With the cancellation this year of the popular but apparently ill-funded Sunset Junction music festival, the Eagle Rock Music Festival provides music festival lovers in Los Angeles and Hollywood the opportunity they missed earlier.
One drag for music lovers is that there are no on-site alcohol sales. Somehow, having a drink, be it beer or a cocktail, listening to concerts is part of the live music experience. The alternative is to grab drinks at Verdugo Bar and the Black Boar, two bars in the area.
The Eagle Rock Music Festival takes place on at Colorado Blvd., and Eagle Rock Blvd. The link to its website is here.

After a last minute battle with LA City Board of Public Works, the Sunset Junction Music Festival has officially been canceled for failure to produce the $141,000 in fees necessary to move forward with the event scheduled for the weekend of August 27-28th.
From RollingStone.com:
The Sunset Junction Street Fair, a music festival that has been running annually in Los Angeles since 1980, has been officially canceled after the city’s Board of Public Works denied organizers permits to hold the event this weekend. The five-member panel unanimously rejected pleas from promoters who failed to produce $141,000 in fees to cover the event.
The festival, which was to include sets by stylistically disparate acts such as Hanson, the Butthole Surfers, k.d. lang, Peaches, Bobby Womack and the Melvins, is now entirely scrapped. It is unknown whether or not the artists, promoters or volunteers will be compensated.
The Sunset Junction organizers owed the city $400,000 in unpaid fees for the 2010 and 2011 events. The nonprofit Sunset Junction Neighborhood Alliance faxed a document showing that they had received a $100,000 loan from the concert promoter Live Nation to bail them out of the mess, but Board president Andrea Alarcon dismissed the gesture, saying that it was not an indication that the funds would be available to pay for the permits. “I do see a deposit of $100,000, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot,” she said.
The sudden loan from Live Nation did not improve their standing at all. A spokesperson for City Councilman Eric Garcetti accused the organizers of trying to “flimflam $400,000 from the taxpayers” and noting that coming up with a large sum of money at the last minute “shreds their credibility even more.” “They should have spent the last 12 months coming up with the full amount,” he told the Los Angeles Times.

Headlining the 2011 festival on Saturday, September 10, will be multiple-Grammy Award winning guitarist and singer, BEN HARPER, who is known for his fusion of rock, reggae and roots music. This will be Harper’s exclusive Southern California concert in support of his newest release, Give Till It’s Gone. Sacramento based, CAKE will headline on Sunday, September 11. Cake produced their latest album Showroom of Compassion (released in January 2011) and recorded it in their own solar-powered studio in Sacramento. The album was preceded by its first single, “Sick of You”, hitting number 4 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The album itself opened at number 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums.
Also appearing at Doheny Days will be G Love & Special Sauce, Neon Trees, Donavon Frankenreiter, Katchafire, JJ Grey & Mofro, Black Uhuru and Shwayze & Cisco. The festival will feature three stages of roots, rock, reggae and funk music with a total of 25 performances during the weekend. Additional acts will be announced in the coming weeks.
Doheny Days is produced by Omega Events, which has successfully operated 25 festivals at Doheny State Beach, including 8 years of Doheny Days (1997-2004) and fourteen consecutive years of the internationally recognized Doheny Blues Festival. “For years, fans of Doheny Days have been awaiting its return and we felt it was time to deliver,” says Rich Sherman, President of Omega Events. “I can’t tell you how many emails and phone calls I’ve received over the years from people asking about the festival.” The excitement and love for Doheny Days never faded, inspiring the producers of the event to re-launch their beloved beach festival.

Heads and Hippies everywhere will likely be hitting the festival circuit next year in the hot new VW Microbus Tent from Firebox. The big concern in my mind is someone coming out of a show slightly impaired and trying to drive your tent home. It's gonna set you back a couple of duckets though. Retail is £299.99 ≈ €339 ≈ $492.
Check out the full description below from the folks at Firebox.
If you love music, mud and Mother Nature you’re probably heading to a camp site at some point this summer. But why take shelter in some dull, conventional tent when you can recreate the Summer of Love in the hippie-tastic VW Camper Van Tent.
View from behind and the side (with doors rolled open)
Officially licensed, this stunning four-man (or lady, natch) tent is a luxe, full-size replica of the iconic 1965 VW Camper Van synonymous with 60s counterculture. It’s so evocative you can almost hear the Mamas and the Papas singing California Dreamin’ every time you feast your eyes on its beautifully breadloaf-ish form. Indeed we half expected Mama Cass to tumble out when we first saw this groovy Vee-Dub. You’ll be the envy of the campsite!
But there’s more to this highly realistic pretend hippie/surfermobile than mere good looks. Just like its vehicular counterpart you can stand up inside – handy if you don’t fancy crawling around on your hands and knees after a day at the main stage. What’s more its fabric roof and sides are 3000mm and 1000mm respectively – mighty impressive, especially when you consider British Military spec is only 800mm (and we consider things like that quite a lot).

Spot the coolest tent!
Factor in two zip-separated double-size rooms, allowing couples to sleep/knit yoghurt/spread the love in private, plus an outer that can be put up first to offer some shelter as you erect the other bits and bobs, and you’re looking at the greatest thing to hit the world of boho living since… well, since the original VW Camper Van. All together now, ‘If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to take your Vee-Dub Camper Tent…’

Conscious Alliance will conduct the “Art That Feeds” Food Drive at the festival to benefit the River Valley Regional Food Bank (Fort Smith, AR), which distributes food to nearby residents who have recently been displaced due to the devastating tornadoes this summer. All patrons that donate 10 non-perishable food items will receive a free Harvest Music Festival poster created by Amber Patten. Food donations will be collected at the Conscious Alliance “Art That Feeds” onsite gallery.
Rock The Earth also joins Harvest Music Festival along with river-rafting experts Turner Bend and the Shimon Presents Work Exchange Team to lead a “River & Road Cleanup” on Wednesday, Oct. 12 (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) in the vicinity of Mulberry Mountain.
