Southern California’s premier Grateful Dead Experience, Cubensis, will host their annual Halloween Costume Ball this year at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana, CA on October 28th.  Joining Cubensis will be Jerry Garcia Band Tribute, The Maykers, and Long Beach, CA’s The Memorial Highway.  Cubensis will be joined on stage by former Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead) Band guitarist Barney Doyle.

Every year Cubensis “dresses up” as another tribute band and performs a complete album referred to as the “Mystery Album” which remains a secret until the concert.  Previous years have included albums by The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Derek & The Domnios, Jefferson Airplane and many more.  The “Mystery Album” will be followed by a full set of Grateful Dead music.

The Maykers, a special tribute to The Jerry Garcia Band, includes members of the Jerry Garcia Band, Bob Dylan and Dave Matthews Band.  The Maykers are David Kemper (drummer for Jerry Garcia Band 83’-94’, Bob Dylan’s Band 5+ years), Andy Braunstein, Cheryl Rucker (vocals Melvin Seals and Jerry Garcia Band), Richard Hardy (Carole King Band 15+ years, Dave Matthews Band 30+ shows) Austin Bach (Groundation), Marty Holland (Melvin Seals and JGB 9 years), Scott McGregor.  They will be performing a full set of songs by the Jerry Garcia Band. Lisa Malsberger, an orginal “Mayker”, will also sit in on backing vocals with Rucker. C W Causer will sit behind the, rare, second drum kit.

The Memorial Highway (formerly Heavywater) from Long Beach, CA will be opening the show.

The Cubensis show at the PCH Club in Long Beach on July 22nd got a visit from a true rock n’ roll legend.  Legendary rock n’ roll tour manager, Sam Cutler, stopped in to hear the Southern California Grateful Dead tribute perform at their regular Friday night residency.  Sam was accompanied by Philip Savell, a long time friend of both Cubensis and Long Beach’s own Sublime.

Cutler, best known as the tour manager of the Rolling Stones, has also been credited as the guy who hired the Hells Angels as security for the Altamont Free Concert that resulted in stabbing of a concert goer.

From Wikipedia:

“Following the events at Altamont, Cutler stayed in the U.S. to deal with the aftermath, was befriended by Jerry Garcia, and subsequently hired by the Grateful Dead as their tour manager. He went on to become a co-manger of the band (with Jon McIntire and David Parker) and eventually became their agent.

Cutler co-ordinated the Dead’s appearances at a number of memorable events including: the 1970 Festival Express Tour of Canada, The Summer Jam at Watkins Glen (at 700,000+ paid admission the largest single paid admission events in rock n roll history), and the 1972 European Tour of the Grateful Dead, the musical results of which can be heard on the Dead’s triple live album “Europe ’72“.

Through his company “Out of Town Tours”, Cutler coordinated the appearances of many artists including: The Grateful Dead, The Band, The Allman Brothers, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Sons of Champlin, Mike Bloomfield, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and others.”

On a Sunday afternoon, while Los Angeles was reeling from an over-hyped Carmageddon weekend, Grateful Dead tribute, Cubensis, moved their normal Sunday evening time slot from The Central in Santa Monica, CA to Bluebird Park in Laguna Beach, CA, to the delight of the Dead family with children.

Kicking off at 5pm on Sunday afternoon, adults and children filled the park in the hills, just a few blocks off the bustling Laguna Beach stretch of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) to hear some free Grateful Dead music. Hippies danced and children played on the wonderland of playground options in the park while Craig Marshall and company wove a musical tapestry of Grateful Dead favorites for them.

As the sun slowly sunk into the Pacific and the band closed out the day with “Sugar Magnolia,” Marshall announced “We’ve done run out of time” to a disapproving park full of people. Moments later they returned to finish the song with it’s signature “Sunshine Daydream” ending. Leaving the stage once again, only to return with an amazing cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” sung by CeCe Sherman.

A fine day for a party in the park. This show kicked off a series of concerts at the Bluebird Park this Summer.

Other acts scheduled to perform are:
7/24 UnderCover Girls – Rock Covers
7/31 The Police Experience
8/7 Opa Opa – Latin
8/14 Jah Mex – Reggae
8/21 Tom Nolan Band
8/28 The Wonderelles – 50′s
