Southern California’s premier Grateful Dead Experience, Cubensis, will host their annual Halloween Costume Ball this year at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana, CA on October 28th.  Joining Cubensis will be Jerry Garcia Band Tribute, The Maykers, and Long Beach, CA’s The Memorial Highway.  Cubensis will be joined on stage by former Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead) Band guitarist Barney Doyle.

Every year Cubensis “dresses up” as another tribute band and performs a complete album referred to as the “Mystery Album” which remains a secret until the concert.  Previous years have included albums by The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Derek & The Domnios, Jefferson Airplane and many more.  The “Mystery Album” will be followed by a full set of Grateful Dead music.

The Maykers, a special tribute to The Jerry Garcia Band, includes members of the Jerry Garcia Band, Bob Dylan and Dave Matthews Band.  The Maykers are David Kemper (drummer for Jerry Garcia Band 83’-94’, Bob Dylan’s Band 5+ years), Andy Braunstein, Cheryl Rucker (vocals Melvin Seals and Jerry Garcia Band), Richard Hardy (Carole King Band 15+ years, Dave Matthews Band 30+ shows) Austin Bach (Groundation), Marty Holland (Melvin Seals and JGB 9 years), Scott McGregor.  They will be performing a full set of songs by the Jerry Garcia Band. Lisa Malsberger, an orginal “Mayker”, will also sit in on backing vocals with Rucker. C W Causer will sit behind the, rare, second drum kit.

The Memorial Highway (formerly Heavywater) from Long Beach, CA will be opening the show.

The Great Flood Comes to Select Markets Throughout the U.S.

“Great Flood” promo from Bill Morrison on Vimeo.

Grammy Award-winning guitarist and composer Bill Frisell and Obie-winning experimental filmmaker Bill Morrison recently premiered “The Great Flood,” – an electrifying, soulful, and thought provoking 75-minute multimedia work of original music and film inspired by the 1927 Mississippi River floods. Now, Frisell and Morrison take The Great Flood on the road, stopping at select University and public venues across the country. The complete list of dates is listed below.

The Great Flood premiered last month at ELLNORA | The Guitar Festival at the University of Illinois’ Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, and received a standing ovation for its stirring, contemporary perspective on this natural disaster and the ensuing transformation of American society and music. In the spring of 1927, the Mississippi River broke out of its banks in 145 places and inundated 27,000 square miles to a depth of up to 30 feet. Part of its enduring legacy was the mass exodus of displaced sharecroppers. Musically, the Great Migration of rural southern blacks to Northern cities saw the Delta Blues electrified and reinterpreted as the Chicago blues, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll.

Members of the Illinois Emerging Digital Research and Education in Arts Media Institute (eDream) and the Advanced Visualization Laboratory (AVL) at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) collaborated with Morrison on the film, creating data-driven visualizations of the Mississippi River Valley showing the extent of the destructive floodwaters. “This was a novel collaboration between an inspired artist and data-visualization experts,” said Donna Cox, director of eDream and AVL.

The Great Flood is currently confirmed to stop in the following places:
2011
Thursday, November 3 – Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH
Friday, November 4 – Zankel Hall, New York, NY
Saturday, November 5 – Duke University, Durham, NC

2012
Saturday, March 31 – Wexner Center, Columbus, OH
Thursday, April 19 – UC San Diego, La Jolla, CA
Saturday, April 21 – SF Jazz, San Francisco, CA

Additional dates to be announced.

Bob Weir 64 Bday

Well, the Beatles found it necessary to sing about it so we thought it important too. Today, October 16, 2011, Bob Weir turns his Beatle Birthday (64). In honor of this momentous occasion, here’s the song that tells you all about it. Tell me Bobby, do you still need us, will you still feed us, now that you’re 64?!

A cool video from a great band. Jeremy Buck & The Bang just released this video for the title track off their latest offering “You Are A Star.” It was shot partially at The Mint in Los Angeles, CA. This single is just the tip of the iceberg that is the You Are A Star album. Full of great tracks!

October 6, 2011, the last night of a two day run in Los Angeles, CA, Furthur w/ the Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh and Bob Weir paid tribute to Apple President and Founder, Steve Jobs, who passed away the day before ending a long bout with pancreatic cancer.  Announcing a setbreak, Phil Lesh said, “In case you haven’t figured it out yet, tonight is for Steve Jobs.”

Furthur peppered the first set with fitting tributes to Jobs including the Beatles cover, “Here Comes the Sun”, Pink Floyd’s “Time” and Grateful Dead favorites “Death Don’t Have No Mercy” and the ever moving “Ripple” to close out the first set.  “Sugar Magnolia” and “Cassidy” kicked off the night and Phil Lesh took the lead on his tune, “Peaceful Valley.”

Now that everyone was aware of the Jobs memorial set, it was not hard recognizing that Furthur put a lot of thought into their song selections for Apple’s fallen leader.  Dear Mr. Fantasy, The Wheel, Uncle John’s Band, Mountain Song, I Know You Rider, The Other One>St. Stephen, So Many Roads>Supplecation Jam>Uncle John’s Band Reprise.  As the unusually cool evening in LA felt the waves of music wash over it, a single small cloud stopped over the venue to listen in.  I like to think it was Jerry and Steve Jobs sitting there watching in as the band played the music and the crowd tweeted away on their iPhones about it.

Encore was Attics of My Life.  A great song but hardly the punch the crowd hoped for to close out the two stay stop in tinsel town.  Furthur heads off to Monterey, CA to close out the Fall Tour.

Side Note:  The last time I saw Furthur was a year ago in Santa Barbara, CA.  A lack-luster offering at that time but since then it seems that John Kadlecik has grown well into his spot with this band.  Joe Russo behind drums has also found a comfortable spot in the best seat in the house right between the bass and the guitar.  Especially given that bass is Phil Lesh and that guitar is Bob Weir.  Sounding better than ever as they continue to shrug off the blanket of the Grateful Dead and build on the band that is FURTHUR.

When I saw this video I was appalled that someone would beat someone bloody over stickers.  Even worse, he claims he works for Phish.  Watch the video then read the account from the YouTube poster below.

From digiprez77 on YouTube: Asian guy or friend allegedly was selling stickers and big guy tried to take them away after showing some creds. Fight ensued during which the asian guy was pepper sprayed multiple times, then hit with a walkie-talkie, which is where all the blood came from. Big guy was poked in the eye. It is still not really clear who really instigated the fight, seems like both sides were at least partially at fault.

The big guy is a karate instructor, and claims to work lots for bands including Phish looking for illegal merchandise, which he confiscates. He has been sighted at venues in the past doing similar things to what you see here.

I understand the need to attempt to stem the bootleg market on lots, and I never buy anything, but this is not the way to curb illegal sales. I am not aware that the asian guy was even arrested or anything. He apparently returned to the lot after being treated medically.

Clearly this enforcer guy is a liability to anyone that hires him. Reminds me of when the Hell’s Angels were hired by the Dead. No one should have to go to a concert and see an act like this perpetrated by someone who possibly works for the band.

It remains unclear whether or not the big guy really works for Phish, as no one has claimed responsibility for him. Luckily there were apparently no really serious injuries, and true to form some loyal Phish fans got in there and prevented further conflict, despite the health risks.

If nothing more comes of this at least people know that contributing to the bootleg merchandise trade in any way contributes to things like this. Phish has let us record and distribute their music for free for years, how much more do we need from them? I do not condone violence in any form, but there ARE people ripping the band off, and they do deserve to be punished, but in a court, not on the street.

I really hope that this video helps to resolve this issue and maybe even prevent things like this from happening in the future. We are a self-policing group for the most part, or would like to have it that way, so it is our responsibility to keep the lots safe and fun. Original artwork and clothing designs are fine and contribute to the community, but bootleg logo stickers and t-shirts that constitute copyright infringement do not belong on the lot. There is a store for that.

Like I said, I do not condone violence of any kind on the lot, but Phish and bands like them do have the right to protect their property. It just shouldn’t happen in any way shape or form resembling this fracas…

This really freaked me out.

The Yost Theater in Santa Ana, CA was built 53 years before the Grateful Dead started to play.  Next year the venue will turn 100 years old.  A month ago the venue re-opened as the new hot spot in Orange County, CA to see live music.  I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to check out this legendary venue that touts itself as the “oldest theater in Orange County.”  What better way to break in a new venue than with a concert of good ol’ Grateful Dead music, courtesy of Dark Star Orchestra.

As the band took the stage they made an announcement that this show was dedicated to the mother of their good friend, and band member, Lisa Mackey.  Lisa’s mother passed away that very day.  Lisa flew home but the band made a point saying that Lisa would love this setlist.

Statement from the band:

We wanted to share this news with our DSO family and community…Last night, Lisa Mackey’s mother passed away…She was able to spend time with her Mom before she passed peacefully.

Instead of sending flowers, for those interested, you could send a donation on behalf of BertiLOU Mackey to:
Greene County Humane Society
183 Jefferson Road
Waynesburg, PA 15370 – 8011

Lisa will return to the tour this weekend and join the band on stage on Sunday for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Thank you for your unending support.

Usually re-creating classic Grateful Dead shows in their entirety, DSO stepped out of their usual mode and performed a set list indicative of a 1969-70 Grateful Dead show, chock full of long jams, Pigpen standards and rarely heard tunes.

Setlist, Yost Theater, 9-27-11

Set 1: China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider, Good Morning Little School Girl, Doin’ That Rag, Hard To Handle, Dancin’ In The Streets, He Was A Friend of Mine, Good Lovin’>Drums>Good Lovin

Set 2: New Speedway Boogie, Silver Thread, Golden Needles, Deep Elem Blues, Cryptical>Drums>Space>The Other One>Spanish Jam>Attics of My Life>The Other One>Cryptical>Viola Lee Blues
