Morsoul

We all wave the “save the planet” flag high and proud.  Some stop right there at waving the flag and go no further.  Not funk/rock/jamband Morsoul from Boulder, CO.  They’ve not only gotten on “the bus” they’re fueling it with used cooking oil and taking it across the country to promote alternative fuels and “green” living.

Touring the country in a veggie-oil powered bus playing clubs and college campuses, Morsoul is not only talking the talk, they’re showing that they can walk the walk.  At schools, the band sets up “Eco-Events” to educate students about alternative energy and sustainable living.  Topics include recycling, conserving electricity and water, buying local, producing less waste, and relying on less packaging.

Eco-Party at The Central

Morsoul brings their unique bio-diesel tour bus to the Los Angeles area February 22-26 for their Morsoul Eco-Tour with FREE events at Mount Saint Mary’s College (2/22 1-3pm) and Scripps College (2/25 7-9pm).  The tour will finish with a concert at The Central Social Aid & Pleasure Club in Santa Monica, CA with LA bands, Quactus and The Blind Blakes on 2/26 at 8:00 pm.  Morsoul will show off their Eco-Tour Bus during the shows.

Morsoul’s version of funk rock comes with a band that cares about the environment.  “We wanted to show everyone that it’s possible to make a difference, one show at a time,” commented Dan Menchey, lead singer and drummer of Morsoul.

Morsoul has set up Eco-Parties and played Earth Week Festivals at dozens of colleges including University of Wisconsin/Green Bay, UIC (Chicago), and American Univ. (DC).  They are touring in support of the release of their new album Sustenance.

Tickets for the concert at The Central are $10 and available at http://www.centralsapc.com.  The Central is located at 14th and Santa Monica Blvd in Santa Monica, CA.

Bob Weir and the Mother Hips Rocked for the Rainforest

Thursday, October 14th celebrated the 25th anniversary of RAN, (also known as The Rain Forest Action Network), in its home city of San Francisco, with a little help from Bob Weir and The Mother Hips.

RAN is an innovative environmental activist group that brings awareness to protecting the rain forest and last remaining acres of wildlands in the world.  Victories include invoking change in large corporations such as Burger King and General Mills, who now partake in new environmentally conscious corporate policies as a result of RAN’s involvement.

The event was highlighted by speeches from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other prominent activists, followed by two sets of fine Bay area style rocking.  The party was held on a private floor of San Francisco’s Metreon, with organic hors d’oeuvres, an open bar of eco cocktails and sustainable wines, and an environmental-themed photobooth, complete with “Shame on Chevron” prop signs.  Rock photographer Jay Blakesberg captured the evening with his fantastic lens as Bonnie Raitt and numerous Bay area musicians speckled the crowd, all flanked by fabulous views of a twinkling San Francisco evening.

On a stage set between giant photographs of exotic parrots and tigers, The Hips rocked through a set of their own tunes before Bob Weir joined them for an all Dead set, as party-goers moved tables aside and danced the night away.

The Dead set went like this:

Maggie’s Farm
Little Red Rooster
Cassidy
Friend of the Devil
The Other One
Going Down the Road Feeling Bad

Governor Arnold Schwartzenegger Smoking Marijuana

Just over a month before the big Proposition 19 bill goes up for a vote to officially legalize marijuana in the state of California, the Governator, Arnold Schwartzenegger signed a bill to decriminalize possession of the plant.

By signing this bill, the possession of less than an ounce of marijuana will result in the equivalent of a speeding ticket.  A fine of $100.  No longer a misdemeanor, this new law will free up the court system and all of the money that goes along with prosecuting the offenders.  I bet those 60,000+ people who were prosecuted last year for possession wish he’d done this a long time ago.  The bill takes effect on January 1, 2011.

On November 2nd, Californians will vote on Proposition 19 which proposes full legalization of marijuana so this act by the Governor may be merely political posturing and mean absolutely nothing.  Proposition 19 proposes that lilgalizing marijana will result in billions of taxable income for the state and with the stroke of one pen could eliminate the budget crisis in California.

Whether you are for or against the smoking of marijuana for medical or recreational purposes, you have to admit that California could sure use the money.  As Fiorello LaGuardia, former Mayor of New York said when asked to make Marijuana illegal, “You want me to make a PLANT illegal?”

Everything Must Go is a Wild Trip into The Not-Too-Distant Future

Everything Must Go.  Sounds like a “Going Out of Business” sale.  In some part it is.  The new film by the Grateful Dead’s official “video guy,” Len Dell’Amico, who produced for Jerry Garcia and the boys, such amazing live concert footage as Dead Ahead, So Far and the Madison Square Garden Benefit for the Rainforest has written and directed a feature length film that will make you question humanity and your own personal sanity.  Mick Stern co-wrote the script with Dell’Amico.

Set in the not-too-distant future around the San Francisco Bay area, Everything Must Go, takes you on a drug fueled romp through one fateful afternoon as two friends, Mac and Bobby, seek out a fix for Mac’s nasty Oxycontin habit.  What begins as a seemingly simple quest for one unemployed nano-tech employee and one nutty street guy who channels an intergalactic DJ, ends with both finding way more than the drugs they sought to buy.

Ross Turner (Bobby) and Eleese Longino (Heidi)

Delivering a cast of bizarre and abnormal characters, Everything Must Go mixes a disturbing reality of what might be with a soundtrack full of great songs from Bob Weir & RatDog, Widespread Panic, Joan Osborne, The Mermen, and the Yardbirds.

This film is as destined for “Cult Classic” like This is Spinal Tap, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Heavy Metal or The Big Lebowski. Highlighted by an amazing, relatively unknown cast including the very funny Ross Turner (Bobby) and a special appearance by Rev. Billy from The Church of Life After Shopping.

Bobby Ponders the Inevitable

While Everything Must Go wreaks of low budget masterpiece, it’s overall message of humanity’s battle with nature vs. technology is both pertinent and timely with an overwhelming proof how the legacy of the Grateful Dead continues to permeate the membrane of social, political and cultural norms.

A must have video for the self-aware, consciousness seeking, member in every family as it tickles your funny bone into it’s place in the cosmos.

Visit the Everything Must Go website to watch the trailer then buy it for your collection.

Steve Harris Photo by Ebb Eskew

The “Special Guest” line-up for the, much anticipated Quactus CD release party at The Mint on August 28th is growing and will now include Cubensis drummer, Steve Harris behind one of the kits for a song or two and a 5-6 player drum jam.

Viking from Delta Nove

A month after the release of the much anticipated “A Sense of We” album from Los Angeles’ fastest rising jamband, Quactus, the band will host a CD release party at the legendary MINT nightclub in Hollywood on August 28th.  The event is billed as “and Friends” which will include special appearances from Mike Mangan of  Big Organ Trio, Viking from Delta Nove, Josh Baldwin from Exactly and Keith Erickson from Harbingers.  The show will include an amazing visual light display by VJ- DBlock, hula hooping by Hoopsoul’s Meryl Aydin and live painters.   Tickets are $15 and will INCLUDE A FREE CD!

On “A Sense of We,” featuring guest artists Steve Molitz from Particle and Mike Mangan from Big Organ Trio, Quactus has brought some major players on this album to add to an already exceptional group of musicians.  “A Sense of We” has a unique cover, spelling out “A Sense of We” with photos of hands sent in by fans of the band.  If you sent in your hand, check out the cover to see if you can find your hand.

Quactus commented on their website, “After the many months of recording, editing, mixing, and more mixing, we are thrilled that you all get to finally hear what we’ve worked so hard to create for you.  We hope you dig it.  If you do, let us know, and let your friends know too!”

You can sample the first two tracks below for free but you’ll have to buy the album to get the whole Quactus experience.  “At Ease” was featured as the Editor’s Pick of the Month in Relix magazine three months ago.  Well deserving and a great way to start an album.  “Superflitious” features Mangan’s amazing Hammond B3 stylings.

Quactus has added additional dates to their CD release tour including a September 2nd Winston’s show in Ocean Beach, CA and September 3rd at Golden China in Ventura, CA.  Each show will include it’s own group of “And Friends” but the Mint show will, no doubt, be the epic jam that you won’t want to miss.

You can find the album for download on iTunes, Amazon, Napster, and CDBaby.  You can also order a hard copy directly from Quactus by going to the Merch page on their website, www.quactus.com.

Click to Donate to Help the Turtles

Environment California needs your help:

With only a few weeks left to pass a ban on single-use plastic bags, you can help give turtles a voice — and put our campaign over the top.

Floating in the ocean, a plastic bag looks a lot like a jellyfish to a sea turtle — one of their favorite foods. And the chilling fact is that turtles can choke on these bags or starve to death with stomachs filled with plastic.

In order to bring much-needed attention to the damage the 19 billion single-use plastic bags California uses each year does to wildlife and the environment, we’re taking a giant, 25-foot inflatable turtle on tour through the state.

Building the turtle and paying for travel will cost us about $10,000 — which we need to raise by next week. Can you help make our plan a reality by donating today?

We’re at a critical moment in our campaign to ban single-use plastic bags in California. And with our opposition lobbying hard against us, it’s going to take an extra push to pass the ban.

A ban on single-use plastic bags would be a game changer — reducing the number of plastic bags we use each year by billions and billions, and would cut the waste that’s littering our streets and beaches and accumulating in the oceans.

Big opportunities call for big turtles.

Here’s our plan:

* Build a giant 25-foot turtle, and bring it up and down the coast holding rallies for the bag ban, with stops in San Diego, Long Beach, San Barbara, San Luis Obispo and San Jose.

* Cut through the opposition’s smoke-screens. Chemical industry lobbyists are claiming this problem can really be solved through better recycling. We want to remind people of the bottom line: The 19 billion bags we use each year hurt our environment, especially the sea turtles who mistake the bags for food. We can’t recycle our way out of the problem.

* Get local mayors, city-council members and other elected officials to join with us in calling for a statewide single-use plastic bag ban. This campaign started at the local level and will end with their strong support.

Whether you donate $25 or $250, your contribution today brings a ban on single-use bags one step closer:

Fireworks as The Dead play "US Blues" at Rothbury Music Festival 2009

It’s the 4th of July weekend!  A time where we, as Americans, celebrate our countries independence from Britain in 1776 and the signing of YOUR Constitution and Declaration of Independence.  This 4th of July we should reflect on what’s going on in our country and do our part as citizens to make sure that our government realizes that “For the People, By The People” means you and me and not the large multi-national companies that squander our resources for their profit margins.  Below is a a Top 10 Corruptions in Washington.

Shakedown News thanks our friend Tim Heugele for passing this along.  It’s time to question the actions of our leaders.  Do they really have our best interest in mind when making decisions?

From Tim:

You might have heard this: BP is so well connected in Washington that even after being cited for 760 different safety and environmental violations, the company still got environmental waivers for the Deepwater Horizon rig that’s now destroying the Gulf.1

But BP’s not alone in using its DC influence. Check out the list below of other companies’ outrages—then pass it along. And be sure to sign our new Fight Washington Corruption Pledge to support 3 key measures that will protect our democracy from corporate lobbyists!

http://fightwashingtoncorruption.org/?id=21534-8635144-48akz7x

1. Exxon Mobil made billions in profits, and yet paid not one dime in federal income taxes in 2009.2

2. The 2005 energy bill had a little known provision, commonly called the Halliburton Loophole, which exempted natural gas drilling from the Clean Water Act. The result? Water so contaminated that you can light it on fire.3

3. Massey Energy was cited more than 2400 times for safety violations in its mines, but chose not to fix potentially lethal problems because low penalties meant it was cheaper to simply keep paying the fines. This spring, 29 miners were killed in an underground explosion at a Massey mine in West Virginia.4

4. Michael Taylor was the FDA official who approved the use of Monsanto’s Bovine Growth Hormone in dairy cows (even though it’s banned in most countries and linked to cancer). After approving it, he left the FDA—to work for Monsanto. Until last year, when he moved back to the government—as President Obama’s “Food Safety Czar.” No joke.5

5. Internal Toyota documents outline how the company was successful in limiting regulators actions in the recalls last year—saving hundreds of millions while the death toll continued to climb.6

6. GE and its lobbyists—including 33 former government employees—have successfully lobbied Congress to override Defense Department requests to cancel a GE contract to work on a new engine for the Joint Strike Fighter jet. GE will need $2.9 billion to finish the project.7

7. Top executives at 9 top banks including Citibank, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley paid themselves over $20 billion dollars in bonuses just weeks after taxpayers bailed them out to the tune of 700 billion dollars.8

8. During the waning days of the Bush administration, officials responded to a long-term lobbying campain by pre-empting product liability lawsuits for dozens of whole industries. They bypassed Congress entirely and rewrote rules ranging from seatbelt manufacturing regulations to prescription drug safety.9

9. Sunscreen manufacturers including Johnson & Johnson and Schering-Plough, in the interest of profits, are opposing an FDA proposal requiring full reporting on sunscreen labels. The New York Times just confirmed that current SPF ratings don’t even measure sun rays that cause cancer.10

*********************************************************************************************

10. BP—a company with a record of 760 drilling safety and environmental violations—was granted safety waivers in order to operate the deepwater drilling rig that ultimately created the worst environmental disaster in US history.1

**********************************************************************************************

Mad yet? Sign the pledge here and we’ll pass your name on to your member of Congress, and ask them to Fight Washington Corruption too.

In the spirit of Independence Day, nationwide concerts will be hosted by music venues on July 1st, 2010 to benefit those directly impacted by the Gulf Coast Oil Spill.

The organizers have created an ambitious goal: Gather music venues around the country to donate ticket sales on July 1st and create an online giving platform that encourages donations to the relief efforts. The fundraising goal is set to $100,000, which will be directed to our nonprofit partner the Gulf Restoration Network, which provides assistance to the people, wildlife and wetlands affected as well as advocacy work throughout the Gulf Coast.

The organizers of the event include: Nic Adler, owner of The Roxy on the Sunset Strip; Megan Jacobs of The Roxy, Casey Phillips, talent buyer for venues including Tipitina’s in New Orleans and Viper Room & The Mint in Los Angeles, and Sloane Berrent, founder of Answer With Action and creator of The Causemopolitan.

Revenues from ticket sales will be donated to help the fishermen and their families along the Gulf Coast cope with this disaster in addition to wildlife and wetlands restoration for the Gulf Coast. Over 50 venues have been confirmed and more are being added every day including 5 countries. Artists performing include national as well as local acts across the US.

“We know through music and the generosity of people that we can help make a difference in the Gulf Coast.” Adler says. “We hope this inspires others to make a donation, attend an event and get involved.”

The wetlands and wildlife are in desperate need of our attention now and can’t wait for BP to take care of those in need. Many of our fellow Americans in the foreseeable future will have no livelihood, are preparing to leave their homes and are now lining up for food handouts. With hurricane season on the horizon, there is reason for great concern and it’s crucial the affected communities be prepared for the worst.

Details on how to make a donation or find an event to attend in your area can be found at
www.GulfCoastBenefit.com. Both the online giving platform and an online auction is going to coincide with the benefit concerts.

Confirmed artists include:
Rebelution / Galactic / Kaki King / Mickey Avalon / Ben Lee / Guitar Shorty / Iglu & Hartly / Ivan Neville / Cisco & Shwayze / Walter Wolfman Washington / Sarah Borges / Coco Robicheaux / Beardo / Wicker / Lost Bayou Ramblers / Rotary Downs / Daryl Hannah / Dave Faustino/ Ed Begley Jr

From CREDO ACTION:

News has just emerged from the Gulf Coast that BP is burning endangered sea turtles alive.

A boat captain who has been leading efforts to rescue the endangered turtles says BP has blocked his crews from entering the areas where the animals are trapped, effectively shutting down the rescue operation.

BP is using “controlled burns” to contain the oil spill. Shrimp boats create a corral of oil by dragging together fire-resistant booms and then lighting the enclosed “burn box” on fire. If turtles are not removed from the area before the fire is lit, they are literally burned alive.

Kemp's Ridley Turtle

The sea turtle most affected by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is the Kemp’s Ridley which is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. Parties responsible for killing the endangered turtles are liable for criminal penalties that include prison and civil fines of up to $25,000 per violation.

As a result, BP perversely has a financial incentive to allow the endangered turtles to burn rather than allow rescue crews to cull them from the burn boxes before the containment fires are lit.

“They ran us out of there and then they shut us down, they would not let us get back in there,” said turtle rescuer Mike Ellis in an interview with conservation biologist Catherine Craig that was posted on YouTube.com.
