The church’s mission is to end marijuana prohibition in the United States through education and legislation

A Venice Beach, CA ordained minister, Reverend Bud E. Love, has created the Cannabist Church of Christ, who’s mission is to educate the public on the benefits of marijuana legalization for medical purposes.

Touting cannabis, the scientific name for marijuana, as Christ’s medicine, Rev. Love has started an online campaign to help inform the public on legislation across the US and encouraging them to register to vote and vote to legalize, “something that’s as easy to grow as a tomato,” cannabis.

Nine states in the US have cannabis legislation on the 2012 ballot. Alabama, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Seventeen (17) States currently have laws on the books regulating the use of cannabis as a medicine: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, California, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and Washington D.C.

The Reverend Bud E. Love is an ordained minister.

The Yost Theater in Santa Ana, CA was built 53 years before the Grateful Dead started to play.  Next year the venue will turn 100 years old.  A month ago the venue re-opened as the new hot spot in Orange County, CA to see live music.  I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to check out this legendary venue that touts itself as the “oldest theater in Orange County.”  What better way to break in a new venue than with a concert of good ol’ Grateful Dead music, courtesy of Dark Star Orchestra.

As the band took the stage they made an announcement that this show was dedicated to the mother of their good friend, and band member, Lisa Mackey.  Lisa’s mother passed away that very day.  Lisa flew home but the band made a point saying that Lisa would love this setlist.

Statement from the band:

We wanted to share this news with our DSO family and community…Last night, Lisa Mackey’s mother passed away…She was able to spend time with her Mom before she passed peacefully.

Instead of sending flowers, for those interested, you could send a donation on behalf of BertiLOU Mackey to:
Greene County Humane Society
183 Jefferson Road
Waynesburg, PA 15370 – 8011

Lisa will return to the tour this weekend and join the band on stage on Sunday for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Thank you for your unending support.

Usually re-creating classic Grateful Dead shows in their entirety, DSO stepped out of their usual mode and performed a set list indicative of a 1969-70 Grateful Dead show, chock full of long jams, Pigpen standards and rarely heard tunes.

Setlist, Yost Theater, 9-27-11

Set 1: China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider, Good Morning Little School Girl, Doin’ That Rag, Hard To Handle, Dancin’ In The Streets, He Was A Friend of Mine, Good Lovin’>Drums>Good Lovin

Set 2: New Speedway Boogie, Silver Thread, Golden Needles, Deep Elem Blues, Cryptical>Drums>Space>The Other One>Spanish Jam>Attics of My Life>The Other One>Cryptical>Viola Lee Blues

Encore: King Solomon’s Marbles>Golden Road

Keller WilliamsKeller Williams photo by C. Taylor Crothers

Since Keller Williams first appeared on the scene in the early ’90s, he has helped define the term independent artist. Looking at the diversity of his fall plans, you can certainly ascertain why. Look for Keller on tour through the end of the year in several of his various incarnations, including his newest collaboration – The Travelin’ McCourys Featuring Keller Williams – debuting this fall at Magnolia Fest, Voodoo Music Festival, and others. Also announced today, a New Year’s run: beginning December 28 at The Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, North Carolina. Then on December 29 and 30 the show rolls to The National in Richmond, VA and Norfolk’s NorVa respectively, with Keller Williams on stage for one set solo and one set with his project Kdubalicious, plus very special guests The Pimps of Joytime. For New Year’s Eve, Keller & The Keels ring in 2012 at Brooklyn Performing Arts Center in Wilmington North Carolina. All four venues will also host a Keller Plays for Kids matinee performance earlier that day. Visit kellerwilliams.net for information and tickets.

Also in December, Keller Williams releases his 17th recording, Bass, which is also Keller’s first-ever release playing only bass guitar. The lineup – dubbed Kdubalicious for live shows – features Keller on bass, Jay Starling on keyboards, and Mark D on drums. Additional details on the release of this reggae/ dub/ funk delight will be announced soon.

Brought together by equal parts mutual admiration and the desire to change the musical landscape while staying true to their roots, The Travelin’ McCourys Featuring Keller Williams are a perfect – albeit unexpected – fit. The two have a lot in common after all: their high energy, ever-evolving live shows, their individual playing prowess, and their strong and unique song writing skills. It’s a perfect marriage of instrumental virtuosos, memorable songwriting, infectious musical camaraderie, and undeniable energy. And with both acts known to bring epic and spontaneous live collaborations to theaters and festivals across America – The Travelin’ McCourys Featuring Keller Williams will take this collaborative spirit one step further, promising to bring something fresh and unexpected to the live stage.

Long considered one of the most unique and prolific live performers, Keller Williams brings his signature joyful spontaneity and infectious good humor to another of his recent incarnations: Keller Plays For Kids. A standout at Lollapalooza’s much-buzzed about “Kidzapalooza” and a favorite Super Music Friend on Yo Gabba Gabba! Tour, Keller Plays For Kids heads into theatres in a handful of select markets this fall, including Washington DC, Brooklyn, and others. See below for Keller Plays for Kids details. Sunset Junction MF
After a last minute battle with LA City Board of Public Works, the Sunset Junction Music Festival has officially been canceled for failure to produce the $141,000 in fees necessary to move forward with the event scheduled for the weekend of August 27-28th.

From RollingStone.com:

The Sunset Junction Street Fair, a music festival that has been running annually in Los Angeles since 1980, has been officially canceled after the city’s Board of Public Works denied organizers permits to hold the event this weekend. The five-member panel unanimously rejected pleas from promoters who failed to produce $141,000 in fees to cover the event.

The festival, which was to include sets by stylistically disparate acts such as Hanson, the Butthole Surfers, k.d. lang, Peaches, Bobby Womack and the Melvins, is now entirely scrapped. It is unknown whether or not the artists, promoters or volunteers will be compensated.

The Sunset Junction organizers owed the city $400,000 in unpaid fees for the 2010 and 2011 events. The nonprofit Sunset Junction Neighborhood Alliance faxed a document showing that they had received a $100,000 loan from the concert promoter Live Nation to bail them out of the mess, but Board president Andrea Alarcon dismissed the gesture, saying that it was not an indication that the funds would be available to pay for the permits. “I do see a deposit of $100,000, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot,” she said.

The sudden loan from Live Nation did not improve their standing at all. A spokesperson for City Councilman Eric Garcetti accused the organizers of trying to “flimflam $400,000 from the taxpayers” and noting that coming up with a large sum of money at the last minute “shreds their credibility even more.” “They should have spent the last 12 months coming up with the full amount,” he told the Los Angeles Times.

Heads and Hippies everywhere will likely be hitting the festival circuit next year in the hot new VW Microbus Tent from Firebox.  The big concern in my mind is someone coming out of a show slightly impaired and trying to drive your tent home.  It's gonna set you back a couple of duckets though.  Retail is £299.99  €339   $492.

Check out the full description below from the folks at Firebox.

If you love music, mud and Mother Nature you’re probably heading to a camp site at some point this summer. But why take shelter in some dull, conventional tent when you can recreate the Summer of Love in the hippie-tastic VW Camper Van Tent.

The back and side viewsView from behind and the side (with doors rolled open)

Officially licensed, this stunning four-man (or lady, natch) tent is a luxe, full-size replica of the iconic 1965 VW Camper Van synonymous with 60s counterculture. It’s so evocative you can almost hear the Mamas and the Papas singing California Dreamin’ every time you feast your eyes on its beautifully breadloaf-ish form. Indeed we half expected Mama Cass to tumble out when we first saw this groovy Vee-Dub. You’ll be the envy of the campsite!

But there’s more to this highly realistic pretend hippie/surfermobile than mere good looks. Just like its vehicular counterpart you can stand up inside – handy if you don’t fancy crawling around on your hands and knees after a day at the main stage. What’s more its fabric roof and sides are 3000mm and 1000mm respectively – mighty impressive, especially when you consider British Military spec is only 800mm (and we consider things like that quite a lot).

VW Camper Tent with other tents

Spot the coolest tent!

Factor in two zip-separated double-size rooms, allowing couples to sleep/knit yoghurt/spread the love in private, plus an outer that can be put up first to offer some shelter as you erect the other bits and bobs, and you’re looking at the greatest thing to hit the world of boho living since… well, since the original VW Camper Van. All together now, ‘If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to take your Vee-Dub Camper Tent…’

RELIVEMAG-POSTER

Come September 10th to “Relive the Magic!” a benefit concert for the Ojai Valley Museum, in Ojai’s beautiful new Libbey Bowl. Be part of rock and roll history with this flashback concert recapturing the sound, look and feel of the early years of the “British Invasion” by two of the greatest rock bands ever, The Beatles and the Stones. This family-friendly, non-alcoholic, non-smoking event is the first time in forty-four years that the Ojai Valley Museum has produced a benefit fundraiser or held any event in Libbey Bowl.

Sit under the stars and let Abbey Road-Tribute to the Beatles, take you down to Strawberry Fields Forever. Thrill to the piccolo trumpet solo on Penny Lane and the full orchestration of A Day in the Life. Relive the emotional intensity of Paul’s moving Yesterday solo, as well as the high energy of stadium songs like Twist and Shout plus many other Beatle favorites. With their tight harmonies, flawless note for note renditions of Beatles hits, vintage instruments, Liverpudlian dialect and precise attention to every detail, Abbey Road recreates the magic, music, wit and charm of the Beatles, including the Fab Four’s cheeky personalities, familiar onstage banter and patter between songs. Their three costume changes cover pivotal era transitions with authentic early black Beatle suits, Sgt. Pepper’s regalia and Abbey Road attire. The four musician/actors cast to play John, Paul, George and Ringo were selected from over 120 Beatle tribute musicians.

The Los Angeles Times said, “the show delivers,” and the Orange County Register hailed,” If you see only one tribute show, see this one . . . smart and loads of fun.” The Long Beach Press Telegram called Abbey Road a “highly faithful tribute,” and the Idaho Statesman said, “If you like the Beatles, this is the ticket for you.”

Next up is Jumping Jack Flash who honor the privilege of re-creating a Rolling Stones live performance by delivering what audiences come to see — the theatrics and power of “The World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band” in its raw prime. The greatest care has been given to the smallest details, to ensure that song performance, wardrobe and instrumentation are all spot-on re-creations of the real thing. You’ll swear they’re all there; Mick, prancing and gyrating, Keith ripping licks and posing with his trusty, beat-up Telecaster. Charlie and Bill laying down the backbeat and Brian Jones and Ron Wood rounding out the lineup. Only this is Jumping Jack Flash, “the world’s greatest Rolling Stones live concert re-creation!”

The MC for this exciting event is KRTH 101’s legendary DJ, Brian Beirne, “Mr. Rock N’ Roll.” Order your tickets now and bring the whole family to Ojai’s new Libbey Bowl on September 10th to share in the joy and magic of the music that fanned a pop cultural revolution and has become the soundtrack for a generation. We’ll be pleased to meet you!

General admission tickets are $45 and lawn tickets are $25. They can be purchased online at: BeatlesAndStonesLibbeyBowl.com. Doors open at 5 p.m. Concert starts at 7pm. Tickets may also be purchased at the following Ojai business locations: Ojai Valley Museum, Ojai Community Bank, Rains Dept. Store, Attitude Adjustment, Ojai Creates! and Cardinali Bros.Music. On Tuesday, August 9th, the World Champion San Francisco Giants will be hosting Grateful Dead Night at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Furthur members Phil Lesh & Bob Weir will be singing the National Anthem, joined by SF Giants 3rd Base Coach Tim Flannery.

Tim Flannery, you’re asking? Mr. Flannery is an accomplished Americana singer-songwriter-guitar player. When Kris Kristofferson wrote the memorable line; “From the Kentucky coal mines to the California sun,” in his classic song, “Me and Bobby McGee” he could have easily been referring to the gifted coach, musician and avid surfer.

Born in Tulsa, OK, Flannery always had baseball and music in his blood. The nephew of former Major League Baseball star Hal Smith, Mr. Flannery carved out a successful baseball career playing with the San Diego Padres from 1979-1989 before finding a new career in coaching. Throughout his travels as a baseball player and coach, Flannery, known as “The Flan Man,” has continued to carve out a successful music career performing with his band: The Enablers and recording 8 albums with such seasoned musicians as Doug Pettibone, Jeff Berkeley, Dennis Capplinger, Calman Hart, and Randi Driscoll.

So it’s no surprise that Tim Flannery’s musical chops came to the attention of San Francisco Giants baseball fans Phil Lesh & Bob Weir.
